About

This internship will assist remotely with United Way of Central Alabama’s Help Me Grow program (HMG).  HMG connects families to health and developmental resources so children (birth to age eight) can start school healthy and ready to succeed.  With this proven model, HMG helps to ensure all children have the best possible start in life.  This internship is excellent resume-building experience for someone interested in mitigating overall mental health outcomes by targeting children in their early years and by equipping families with the skills needed to support positive, healthy early childhood development.

CORE COMPONENTS:

·         Making the Connection – receive calls regarding a child’s developmental concerns, assess needs and available resources, and refer families to services

·         Educating Providers – educate professionals about developmental surveillance and screening while promoting access to services

·         Building the Network – develop relationships within the community and maintain an accurate list of local resources

·         Identifying Gaps & Barriers – collect and analyze data to identify needs and effectively connect families to resource

 

Potential Tasks

·         Assist with program outreach to Spanish-speaking families

·         Assist with follow-up on voicemails and emails received to HMG email account

·         Assist in  and hosting virtual developmental screening events

·         Prepare mail-outs including welcome packets, informational resources, paper ASQx, letters, etc.

·         Monitor ASQ Online for incoming screenings

·         Complete follow-up calls for enrolled families to verify connection, improvement, receipt of screenings, and/or additional needs

·         Research and identify appropriate and available resources for families enrolled in HMG

·         Research new resources for various family and child needs including contacting regional resources for eligibility, availability, and insurance information and ensuring that up-to-date information is included in the HMG Family Database

·         Maintain small case-load of level 1 families

·         Participate in outreach events including conference exhibit booths and other provider or family events

·         Assist Care Coordinator in promotional material inventory

 

Qualifications

The ideal intern will have an interest in early child development, social or behavioral sciences, and/or mental health with some experience in working with community resources.  The intern should demonstrate excellent phone and media etiquette.  The intern should have the ability to communicate in a professional manner and work well in a team environment.  Active listening skills and attention to detail are crucial.  The intern should be self-motivated and reliable, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.  Some computer proficiency needed to learn web-based program database.  Hours are flexible.  The ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
